What are the Black Codes?
In 1865 and 1866, state governments in the South established laws that were made to regulate the lives of the former slaves. All the Black Codes basically brought back the segregation in our America. It was a major role into the Civil Rights Act because it upset all of the Blacks in our country. Race was defined by blood. Whoever had more than 1/8 Negro blood was considered a Black and they had to follow these harsh codes that brought segregation back into our country. Every single public facility was segregated. From schools to drinking fountains, the Blacks were treated unfairly and the Whites got a lot more advantages than the Blacks. The Black Codes showed that the Civil War had a small effect because the South just took a new form of slavery.
